UUCF-LIST Preliminary Guidelines, 18 March 1998
Posters' Note
This material is extracted from a note posted on the UUCF listserver
by Donald L. Martell on 18 March 1998. Some material that
dealt with certain particular occurances has been removed. However,
the material under the headings
"UUCF List Purposes" and "Netiquette" is unmodified in content.
The appearance has been modified a little.
The posting of this note does not imply our agreement with it.
While much of it is good, there are parts that
we consider inappropriate for a Unitarian
Universalist church.

UUCF List Purposes
Purpose: The uucf-list is a discussion forum for issues pertaining to or
of interest to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax. This is
a very broad topic, which may include:
- UUCF Planning, Administration, Programs, Worship, and/or Membership
issues
- UUCF Committee purposes, organization, minutes and roles
- Project Ideas - such as Circle Suppers, New Member deserts, RE calendars,
Receptions
- Pros and Cons of Growth, construction, rentals etc.
- Advertising / PR of uucf activities
- Related books, software, experiences in other churches,
other resources
- How we used to do it, and how/why we have changed what we do,
- How to be more inclusive and provide inspiration and support for each
other
- Discussion of ideas enabling our continued growth as intellectual and
spiritual beings, and as responsible citizens
Netiquette
The following guideline will make your interaction with members of the list
more helpful and rewarding, keep the list manageable, and help the
subscribers to feel safe.
- Use a descriptive subject line as many people use the subject line to
decide whether they want to read a message.
- Keep your postings succinct, well organized, and polite. Many readers do
not read more that the first screen.
- Act as you would prefer to be treated and honor the UU principles in all
posts.
- Assumed that any information posted can and will bes
copied and reused.
- Respect copyrighted material.
- Do NOT post commercial advertisements.
- Do NOT post virus information, unless there is a virus being passed on
the list.
- Do NOT post chain letters, no matter how worthy they sound.
- Don't post messages to a list unless you personally know the information
to be true, even for what appears to be good reason.
- Reply directly to the person who wrote the message when you want to
criticize, ask a personal question, ask something off the topic of the
list, or when your message isn't of interest to the group,
- Reply to the list ONLY when you want to make a point that contributes to
the group discussion.
- When replying to a posting, please include ONLY *ONLYONLY*the relevant
portions of the original message in your reply. Delete the parts of the
message that aren't relevant, so each reader doesn't have to wade through
headers, signatures, and other stuff that doesn't pertain to
your message.
- This List is a public forum, not private or personal one. Flames are, by
definition, personal responses, and as such belong on private e-mail.
- Sign all messages with your name.
- All messages should be civil, helpful (or inquiring), and kind.
Immoderate language, insults, emotional outbursts, impolite language,
personal accusations etc. are not appropriate.
