I enclose the PDF of the original PRA handbook. This is the one we developed in the mid 1980s and published in the late 1980s. It was the first time there was such a handbook for participatpory development planning and we have made many changes, as have many other organizations that picked up on the tools and adapted them to their needs. It sold about 15,000 copies in the 1980s -- jointly published by Clark, the World Resources Institute, Egerton University, and Kenya's National Environment Secretariat.
Originally it was a two week operation. That is why there are many tools in this original version.
There is still another version that is even longer but the only addition in this longer version (called PAPPA, for Policy Analysis for Participatory Poverty Alleviation) is that it includes a questionnaire. For the questionnaire, we were working with two economists from either U of Arizona or Arizona State. They designed the questionnaire and it took about 4 hours to administer, per interview. After many weeks of field tests and sample surveys (all carried out in 5 locations in Kenya) we were able to get the interviews down to about an hour. Then we had an Excel template that enabled the groups to enter the data quickly so we could have the results of the questionnaire back to the community the following day so they could use the results in creating their action plan. However, the costs of administering/tabulating the questionnaire increased field costs 3 or 4 times and required a much larger field teams and much more time from the community. I could find all the pieces if you are interested -- I am not sure that I have the original 4 hour questionnaire but I do have copies in French and English (and I think I could still find the Excel template) of the shorter version. I know you are involved with quantitative tools in your work. We could do it for the UUPCC with quantification but my sense is that mobilizing the community can be done just as easily without the quantification. Further, the goal for using the tools via the UUPCC network is to organize information, mobilize resources, and stimulate consensus within the community at very low cost.
Feel free to post it on your website. We sold it for the first ten years but it is now out of print and I see no reason not to post it fully and actively. But realize that it is an archival type document in that I know of no one who is using the book today in the form it was originally presented.
